Researching a potential real-world counterpart of the wondrous subject at hand, I came across an article on the steam-powered Analytical Engine,[1] which was conceptualized by British mathematician Charles Babbage as early as 1837,[2] as a proposed mechanical general-purpose computer. A successor to his first effort, the Difference Engine from 1822, this device "incorporated an arithmetic logic unit, control flow in the form of conditional branching and loops, and integrated memory,"[3] thus marking the "transition from mechanised arithmetic to fully-fledged general purpose computation."[4] In 1991, a perfectly functioning reproduction, based on the descriptions and plans of Chabbage, the Difference Engine No. 2, was built 120 years after the death of its inventor and revealed in 2008 in an exhibition by the London Science Museum.[5][6]
